Using Your Desire
In any quest for spiritual growth there is a struggle between the life one lives and the life one would wish to live. The first step on any path is desire. Using your desire means envisioning your goals, being honest with yourself, developing focus, living in the moment, and assessing your progress in terms of not only what you have accomplished, but also what you have pledged to accomplish. It takes effort, commitment, and, above all, practice, but it centers you in every activity, every state of mind, and every mode of being. Desire can give you a roadmap for life that you never before had the power to access. It can bring you blessings. And, when you've determined what it is you desire, acknowledging what you want can help you achieve those desires.
Understanding your desire can feel difficult at first, as if you were trying to expand your will to influence every second of every minute of every hour. But just as life is a series of events, so can using your desire be a beautiful collage of thought and action. Desiring to eat well is not the same as desiring to write well, which differs from desiring to cause change through prayer - though each brings benefits through the power of will. Using your desire means being conscious at all times of what you are doing, and how and why you are doing it, while keeping your final goal in mind.
To begin, determine what works in your life and what elements you have instinctively found easy to focus on. Ask yourself what you would change and think of strategies to achieve those changes. Trust that each time you commit to the process of focused living, you are doing something positive. Honor your desires as important. Then ask yourself how you can make your life a vehicle for those changes through your state of mind. If you want to work toward improving the environment, you might analyze your actions with that in mind and then act with the intention of doing so. Or your goal may simply be growth, nurturing a career, or finding love. Anything can be accomplished if the desire is strong enough.
Because it asks us to remain focused, using desire not only allows us to achieve goals, but also to appreciate life and all its blessings, to enjoy the simple act of being, and to live each moment to the fullest.
